SIMCom Smart Groundwater Meter, a Good Solution for the Dutch Water Management Company
As one of the substances on which human beings live, water resource plays an important role in human life. Effective management of groundwater resources for preventing overexploitation and extreme water level changes caused by climate change is a worldwide challenge. The Netherlands is a good example in terms of water management. It’s known to all that The Kingdom of the Netherlands (Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in Dutch) literally means a lowland country. 18% of the 40,000 hectares of land in the Netherlands is reclaimed from the sea. That is really amazing.
Water management is crucial for the Netherlands, a country alongside the sea. Since the last century, the average global surface temperature has risen by 0.56℃-0.92℃, and the sea level has risen by about 0.17m. Climate change leads to frequent extreme weather events, which directly threatens the survival and development of the lowland Netherlands. The Dutch Water Authorities keeps an eye on rising water levels all the time, because a small town may disappear suddenly one day.
Effectively and accurately monitoring the groundwater level has become a challenge for the lowland Netherlands. To address this problem, the Dutch Water Company and SIMCom have jointly designed a smart groundwater meter, which carries a SIMCom NB-IoT module SIM7020E. Its wide coverage gives the groundwater meter strong wireless communication capability, which enables the signal to reach underground monitoring points that are difficult to reach by radio and optical cables. The groundwater meter provides hourly measurements and sends the collected groundwater level information and related data to the cloud platform in real time via T-Mobile’s NB-IoT network. The Dutch Water Authorities thus can obtain real-time information remotely, effectively monitor the groundwater level and calculate water demand, etc.
In addition, the SIM7020E module supports low-power PSM and eDRX modes, which can minimize the groundwater meter’s power consumption, so the battery lasts longer. At present, this NB-IoT groundwater meter has been installed by the Dutch Water Management Company in 22 cities across the Netherlands.
