5G & C-V2X, Everything You Want Is Here

2019-09-09 12:39:00

The Mid-Autumn Festival is coming. Are you itching to go out for fun, but worry about traffic jams? Don’t worry. With the advent of the 5G era, the progress of C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) is further accelerated. None of this will be a problem in the future

C-V2X is a smooth evolution from LTE-V2X to 5G V2X. Based on the strong 3GPP ecosystem and continuous perfect cellular network coverage, it can leverage existing cellular infrastructure directly, thereby significantly reducing the cost of future autonomous driving and the deployment of the Internet of Vehicles. Simply speaking, it can achieve high collaboration between “pedestrians-vehicles-roads-clouds”. In C-V2X, V2P means connecting vehicles to pedestrians, which can enhance pedestrian safety; V2V means direct communication between vehicles, which can realize effective early warning and eliminate blind spots; V2I means connecting vehicles to road infrastructure, which can realize communication between vehicles and roads as well as other infrastructure, such as traffic lights, roadblocks and parking spaces information exchange; V2N enables vehicles to connect to a cloud server via a mobile network, thus using the navigation, recreation and anti-theft and other application functions provided by the cloud server. In the end, a safer and more convenient intelligent transportation system will be realized. With the assistance of C-V2X, users can get road information and the optimal route from the cloud in time, saying goodbye to traffic jams. Moreover, with communication and interaction between vehicles, driving safety can also be greatly improved, enabling worry-free mobility.

C-V2X is taken as one of the key driving factors for autonomous driving. The low latency and big bandwidth of 5G provide a good network guarantee therefor. The current latency of a 4G network is around 50-70 milliseconds. For a car traveling at 100km/h, if the latency time of a signal is 50-70 milliseconds, this means that the car has moved more than two meters forward when receiving the signal. It is far from the safety requirements for unmanned vehicles. However, 5G networks can cut the latency time in communication to less than 1 millisecond while providing 99.999% stability.

The combination of 5G and C-V2X makes cars smarter and safer, observant and alert. It has become the object chased by numerous manufacturers. In terms of modules, SIMCom first launched the vehicle-mounted module SIM7800, and then released another two modules SIM8100 and 7920G-M2 which support C-V2X.  In the meantime, the 5G + C-V2X vehicle-mounted module SIM8200X-Au will be launched in next year, which will greatly enrich the Internet of Vehicles market. SIMCom 5G modules in the SIM8200 series are powered by Qualcomm's latest 5G NR modem Snapdragon X55 platform. They support 3G, 4G, 5G multi-mode, and 5G NR sub-6GHz frequency band. They also support the VoLTE function, GNSS function, and network deployment of both SA and NSA. In the 5G mode, the download speed can reach 4Gbps.

The automobile industry is a highly connected industry. Its development can drive the development of multiple upstream and downstream industries, thus promoting the development of urban economy. With the growing communications capacity and computing power, coupled with the development of external technology and environment, road management, information management, vehicle management, autonomous driving, high-definition entertainment, virtual reality and so on will all be realized. Intelligent connected vehicles can be expected in the future.
